METRO VANCOUVER — A 55-year-old long-time Maple Ridge man is in grave condition with head injuries after an apparent attack by a group of teens Sunday night.

Ridge Meadows RCMP is attempting to identify the youth, who were on bicycles leaving a skate part near Dewdney Trunk Road and 232nd Street when the assault occurred.

The 911 calls started coming in just before 8 p.m. The victim was found collapsed in the parking lot of a Shell Station.

“Indications at the scene is that he was the victim of an assault. The male was taken by members of the B.C. Ambulance Service to hospital, where he is in grave condition with head injuries,” Staff Sergeant Alex Bodden said in a release.

The victim was involved in a dispute with a group of young people believed to be between 15 to 18 years old, near Thomas Haney Skate Park at 23000 116 Ave.

“The victim left the skate park, and was pursued by the group, who were on bicycles. At the service station, the victim was struck by one member of the young group, and he fell to the ground. The group then fled from the scene. The incident does not appear to be random,” Bodden said.

Ridge Meadows RCMP media officer Dan Herbranson said the victim is “known to police” but would not comment on whether the man was homeless or not. Earlier this month, Michael Ciro Nestoruk, a homeless disabled man, was found slain outside a Vancouver elementary school. The case remains unsolved.

Herbranson said investigators are still trying to determine how many youth were involved in the Maple Ridge attack.

They are appealing for witnesses to call the RCMP at 604-463-6251 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
