Man gunned down in Cambie Street

BY KIM BOLAN, VANCOUVER SUN SEPTEMBER 30, 2009

Vancouver police cordoned off two blocks of Cambie Street late Tuesday as a body lay in the middle of the road covered by a white tarp.

Stunned neighbours said they heard at least 10 shots at about 10:15 p.m.

One said she thought at first it was fireworks, but knew it was more when police arrived minutes later. Shortly before 11 p.m., police were taking witnesses out of the Flying Wedge Pizza and putting them on a transit bus to be taken away for questioning.

Meanwhile, the body lay in the road in front of Chown Memorial United Church in the 3500-block of Cambie, as paramedics waited by a nearby ambulance.

Witnesses said the victim was a young man about six feet one inch wearing a white hoodie who appeared to run from his Honda after the shooting began. He was struck in the middle of Cambie.

The shooting is the fourth in a series in Vancouver, Abbotsford and Burnaby this week.

Earlier Tuesday, shots were fired in front of the home of a man with gang connections in the 8000-block of Prince Edward in Vancouver. No one was injured. In Abbotsford, a man was shot in the foot about 11:30 p.m. Monday. There was also an attack Sunday night in a Burnaby parking lot.
