Four years in prison for fatal Burnaby stabbing

BY NEAL HALL, VANCOUVER SUNSEPTEMBER 9, 2009 6:01 PM

VANCOUVER — Mohammed Rassul Salim was sentenced Wednesday to more than four years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in relation to the fatal stabbing of a 22-year-old Burnaby man.

Salim, 44, was initially charged with the second-degree murder of Job John Clark, who was killed about 1:30 a.m. Sept. 4, 2006. The accused killer pleaded guilty to the lesser included offence of manslaughter, which reflected the fact that Salim didn’t intend to kill Clark.

During a sentencing hearing in New Westminster, a B.C. Supreme Court judge imposed a sentence of four years and two months and lifetime firearms prohibition, but allowed Salim 10 months credit for time served in pre-trial custody.

Salim had been released on bail before trial but breached his bail conditions.

Clark was stabbed in the chest as he walked away from a group of men he had been drinking with in a park earlier in the evening. He collapsed in a parking lot at the corner of Edmonds and Kingsway in Burnaby.

The deceased, who had a two-year-old daughter, was buried in the small aboriginal cemetery of the Cowichan band in Duncan.

The case was investigated by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, which arrested Salim hours after Clark died. A witness obtained the licence plate number of a van seen leaving the scene.
